Systems are sized by volume, not floor area

This is the single most common specification error. A 200 m² retail floor with a 3 m ceiling and a 200 m² warehouse bay with a 9 m ceiling have the same footprint and three times the difference in volume. The fog has to fill the room, so the room is measured in cubic metres.

Beyond the upper range, the answer is a multi-unit array rather than a single larger unit — coverage is achieved by placing units where the volume is, not by overdriving one of them. Both platforms offer nozzle configurations (standard, narrow, downward) chosen from the geometry of the space and the mounting position available.

What a site survey establishes

The survey exists to answer questions that cannot be answered from a floor plan or a phone call.

  • Protected volume — the cubic metres actually requiring coverage, which is rarely the whole premises.
  • What is being protected, and where it sits. Concentrated high value may justify protecting one zone rather than the full floor.
  • Mounting positions, ceiling height, sight lines and the obstructions that shape fog distribution.
  • Your existing intrusion detection system, and how the fog unit integrates with the panel and its zones.
  • Fire detection interaction — detector type and siting, and interlocking with the fire panel.
  • Escape routes, emergency lighting and exit signage.
  • Power, cabling routes and whether the installation needs to remain concealed.

A supplier who will quote a security fog system without seeing the site is quoting a box, not a system. The box is the smaller part of what determines whether it works.

What drives the cost

  3. How does this integrate with my existing alarm panel, and what happens to my fire detection?
  4. What is the reaction time and the fog output rate?
  5. Does the fluid leave residue, and what is it made of? Ask how they can evidence the answer.
  6. What does servicing involve, how often, and what does it cost to keep the system armed?
  7. Who installs it, and who responds when it needs attention?
